Organic Farm Supervisor

Position Overview: • Will work primarily with, but not limited to, supervision of crop production of 8 acres of Certified Organic farmland as part of a 400 acre conventional farm. • Must have knowledge of practical aspects of growing Certified Organic vegetables • Must be a hands-on supervisor • Coordinate crop and labor schedules with the Production Manager • Coordinate machinery repair with the General Manager, Production Manager and Mechanics Farm Production Functions • Responsible for timely planting, weed control, pest control, irrigation and harvest of organic crops • Must have a passion for quality while keeping the Organic Farm profitable • Will assist as needed with aspects of fruit and vegetable production on the 300 acres of conventionally farmed land, including management of pests, irrigation and harvest. Farm Production Record Keeping Will assist in making sure that all records are accurate and up to date: • All pesticide and fertilizer application records. • Planting, care, production, and harvesting records. • Equipment cleaning records. • Production staff schedule. Maintenance and Repair • Will note any repairs needed to equipment and report to the Production Manager as well as document on the repair board. Farm Production Purchasing Will assist in ensuring prompt and efficient purchasing of organic: • Farm supplies • Farm chemicals • Fertilizer and Lime • Seeds and Plants Labor Management • Will assist the Production Manager with maintaining safety and productivity standards of the labor force. • Will assist in help ensure adherence to company policies for all production employees. • Will help promote good employee morale and teamwork. Packing House Primary Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities are to ensure proper inventories of incoming and outgoing produce. This position works in conjunction with the Retail Operations Manager, Production Manager, CSA Administrator and Assistant Production Manager. • Will be responsible for thrice-weekly inventories and availabilities of Organic Produce. • Will work with Production Mgr. to determine any shortages in Home Grown lists for CSA, tailgate, and retail market. Shortages must be immediately communicated. • Reduction of wasted product through better inventory controls. • Economization of time through organization and communication. Production Special Projects • Plan, organize, and execute special projects as assigned by the Farm Production Manager. This list is not complete, and may change with personnel changes, seasonal changes and the needs of Alstede Farms. POSITION BENEFITS AND CHARACTERISTICS: • Full time year-round salaried position. • Generally a six-day work week March to December. Generally a five-day workweek the rest of the year. May be called in for special events or to assist in snow removal if necessary.
