Permaculture is an ecological design system that aims to mimic naturally occurring ecosystem functions through patterning and harness their potential for long term sustainable renewal. A permaculture design system provides a framework for approaching disparate landscapes based on their individual characteristics, attributes, and limitations. Join Johann Rinkens and Lindsay Napolitano for a special tour of their five-year-old farm, Fields Without Fences. Johann and Lindsay bring a combined 15 years of experience to Fields Without Fences as well as degrees in art, anthropology, and agriculture, and extensive training in permaculture, herbal medicine, and hatha yoga. With this experience and perspective, they restored their degraded land through creating water systems to better channel the frequent flooding, and establishing a biodiverse ‘food forest’ of annuals and perennials. Johann and Lindsay are graduates of NOFA-NJ’s Journeyperson program. Read about the Fields Without Fences story at www.fieldswithoutfences.org/permaculture
