Position: Seasonal Farm Hand

About: Ironbound Farm located in Alexandria Twp; Hunterdon County NJ is looking for a seasonal farm hand for the 2023 season to join our team. Ironbound Farm is a diversified operation situated on 108 Acres of farmland located in the Highlands Preservation zone of Northwest NJ. Ironbound farm is the home of Ironbound Hard Cider. On the farm we have a Tasting room which serves food year-round to the public and holds private events. The farm also has an on- site farm market which is open 5 days a week. The farm has 4,000 Cider apple trees planted in a silvopastured based system where we graze animals in between tree rows. We grow produce year-round in 1⁄2 acre of High tunnels and low tunnels and during the main growing season grow roughly 3 acres of mixed produce. We also raise pigs, sheep, laying hens and geese on our pastures. Most of our production is to serve our onsite tasting room, market and CSA program with a handful of select local wholesale accounts.

Job Description: We are looking for a motivated farm hand with 2-3 years of experience. This is not a management position, and you will not be responsible for facilitating others. Our ideal candidate is someone who can work well with others on group projects but also can work alone and stay focused and complete tasks with hard deadlines. In this role you will be involved in all aspects of our farm operation, and on most days will be working in multiple areas of the farm in a single day. An ideal candidate would meet the following criteria:

1. Equipment operating experience

  1. Skid steer
  2. Cultivating tractor
  3. 100HP Utility/specialty tractor I.e., HC produce tractor / orchard tractor
  4. Attachment operations

i. Mowers, spader, tiller, disk, keyline plow, rotary mower, flail mower, transplanter, sprayer, cultipacker, grader, cone spreader, harvest equipment, BCS and its attachments

e. Other Farm equipment
i. Box Truck, forklift, weed whackers, zero turn mower, chain saws, etc.

  1. Basic understanding of irrigation setup and operation
    1. Drip tape
    2. Overhead traveling Gun
    3. Overhead misters/wobblers
    4. Propagation greenhouse watering
  2. Spraying
    1. Orchard Spraying/Produce Spraying
    2. Basic understanding of liquid measurements/ratios/conversions
  3. Livestock
    1. Assist in feeding/watering livestock and other daily chores
    2. Help with moving livestock to different pastures and paddocks
    3. Potential participation in on-site slaughter
  4. Produce production

a. General knowledge of vegetable production

Job Duration:

  • April 1, 2023 – December 1, 2023
  • Not guaranteed but potential to join our team through the off season

    Compensation:

• Hourly wage $18-$22/hour but this will be determined by experience and performance with the ability for increase in pay during the season.
