Position Summary
Urban Agriculture Support Staff assist in all aspects of implementing urban agriculture and community beautification services. Isles is a community development and environmental not-for-profit based in Trenton, NJ. Isles’ urban agriculture work addresses hunger, food access, and community disinvestment in Trenton by sharing tools, networks, and resources that empower residents and stakeholders to take action and make healthy choices. We support over 70 community and school gardens by providing technical assistance to local residents, teachers and students, and community-based organizations. We also offer garden-based environmental education to schools and summer programs, and manage bee colonies that produce award-winning honey. We work hard and have fun, and are proud NOFA-NJ members!

Essential Functions
Support community and school groups in maintenance of community and school gardens
Assist with planning, planting, and maintenance of gardens
Assist with trouble-shooting of plants, pests, and or diseases in gardens
Support gardening and environmental education efforts, including youth summer camp
Support food access efforts, including growing produce for donation and/or marketing produce for sale
Support beautification projects including vacant lot, park and streetscape clean-up and improvement
Assist with green infrastructure projects such as tree planting, rain gardens, water catchment projects, and native/pollinator plantings
Represent Isles at community events
Assist with other Community Planning & Development work as needed, including Mobile Recreation services.

Education, Experience, Certifications
Gardening or horticulture experience and/or interest
Interest and comfort in working with the general public, especially youth
Experience using gardening and lawn maintenance equipment
Basic construction skills and power tool use
Bilingual in Spanish a plus
Passion for the environment and healthy living
Must have valid driver’s license and insurable driving record

Physical Demands
This job is performed outside and in all kinds of weather
Frequent lifting of 50 pounds or more

Hours
20 hours per week, typically 4 days per week, through November 30th
Schedule has some flexibility; occasional evening and weekends are required

Compensation
$15 to $17 per hour depending upon experience
