Mike became interested in agriculture while studying with Genesis Farm founder Miriam MacGillis. Mike was concerned about our disconnect with the natural world and the impact of our industrial food system. However, he was also deeply inspired by alternatives practiced by the CSG at Genesis, Hawthorne Valley Farm, and Richard Cotton’s grass-based farming along the Musconentcong River. During roundtable talks hosted by Richard, Miriam encouraged us to consider developing a grain hub to help meet the growing demand for local, organic bread. Inspired by these conversations and the stories of “slow grains” coming out of the Northeast, Mike, Lenny, and Larry, founded River Valley Community Grains in 2016 a collaborative approach to restoring health to our soils and communities.
