Al has been a NOFA member since 1978 and previously served on NOFA-NJ’s BOD for 7 years in the 1980s and 90s. He was the first Education Coordinator for NOFA-VT, organizing their first series of “On-Farm” workshops and the first Winter Seminar which became the predecessor to the NOFA chapter’s Winter Conferences. He farmed and market gardened organically for 12 years and his former farm was certified organic the first year of NOFA-NJ’s Certification Program. The standards for this program were written on his kitchen table. For most of the past 25 years he has been a full time organic inspector, recently branching out to related inspections of Non-GMO, Humane Animal Treatment and Gluten Free. He has been active with committees of organic certification and inspection agencies including 26 years on Organic Certification Standards Committees for NOFA-NJ and then Pennsylvania Certified Organic. Al also teaches organic gardening courses at various venues throughout the Northeast.
