This past Sunday, NOFA-NJ and The Suppers Program joined forces to present Sourcing Health Locally, a conference hignlighting the relationships between the healthcare system and the food system. Doctors and consumers alike are recognizing that what we eat affects how we feel. Some doctors and patients are taking this idea a step further. A new initiative is improving the food on today’s hospital plates by incorporating on-site farms. By providing access to fresh food; patients will be educated about the benefits of plant-based and organic foods. They can then apply this knowledge and change their lifestyle towards recovery. After all good health starts with good nutrition. Hospitals are facing challenges such as recipe development and training food service providers, but remain optimistic and enthusiastic.
