Abe's Acres Farm is a 1-acre annual vegetable market garden in Highstown, NJ. We are entering our third season, growing sustainable, chemical-free produce using JM Fortier's market garden model with a BCS walk-behind tractor. Our primary income streams are farmer's markets, wholesale, and a small CSA box share. This year, we are looking for interns and field hands to help shoulder some of the workload. Detailed Description of Position: The intern will be an integral participant in the farm's produce production. The Intern will occasionally be asked to work independently. Abe’s Acres is open to working with the right people to arrange convenient hours and days of work. Seasonal Position: ASAP to October, negotiable hours and length of internship. Position is approximately 20 hours per week; days to be arranged, with weekly farmers markets. Responsibilities include • Food preparation for farmer’s markets • Greenhouse seeding and management • Transplanting • Irrigation installation and running of schedules • Infrastructure development • Field clean up • Cultivation and weed control • Composting • Harvesting, washing, packing vegetables • Farmers market sales, set-up and break down • CSA packing, set up and breakdown • Assisting with additional projects as needed Description of Farm: This is Abe’s Acres third growing season as a small-scale (1 acre) intensive annual vegetable farm, operated using organic and sustainable principles. The farm is located on a long-established property in a beautiful setting in Hightstown, Mercer County. We grow diverse annual vegetables for farmer’s markets, wholesale, and a small CSA. This year, we will also be producing prepared salads for sale at farmers markets. Skills Required: - A desire to learn about farming and to practice farming on a regular basis. - Excellent organizational skills. - Ability to work independently. - Ability to travel to the farm and arrive on time, ready to work each day. - Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions doing sometimes difficult or repetitive tasks. - Ability to lift and carry at least 30 lb and to work at a steady pace while standing, sitting, kneeling, or squatting. - Ability to interact with the public in a pleasant and professional manner and to represent the farm appropriately. - Some experience in gardening, landscaping, or agricultural work.
