Farm Apprentices Wanted for Chicken Farm
Hazelman Farms, a growing egg operation in West Milford, is seeking farm apprentices for 2021. You will be working directly under the farm manager helping to maintain our chicken operations as we grow into a new stage of our farm with planned expansions. You will help steward our responsibly-raised hens, assuring they are well taken care of and provided everything they need, as well as distribution of products to our customers. You will help with the entire vegetable growing operation as well, being involved from seeding to maintenance to harvesting. We in turn will teach you about each segment, sharing our knowledge and welcoming input from you as well. We will involve you in many projects and many facets of farm operation as we are a small team and everyone must wear multiple hats. We will work very closely together in every type of seasonal weather, and this will be hard work. There may be the possibility of the position becoming a permanent staff member at the end of the apprenticeship. On-farm housing is not available. Application deadline: February 12, 2021. WHO WE ARE Hazelman Farms is a rapidly growing egg operation based in upper Passaic County, specifically West Milford. Since its small beginnings in 2005, the farm has expanded to nearly 2,000 pasture-raised egg-laying hens, as well as a market vegetable garden and orchard. 2020 saw our first on-farm apiary, an expansion of our seasonal maple syrup production, and the beginning of an on-farm composting operation. We strive to help our community eat locally and seasonally - foraging sustainably in our woods - as well as working with local businesses to create value-added items using our farm products. Our plans for the near future include more on-farm events as well as an expansion of our fruit and vegetable production, and adding more infrastructure for our main product - eggs! Currently we distribute products in Northern New Jersey, including stores, cafes, and retail operations in Passaic, Bergen, Morris, Sussex, and Essex counties.
