Whether you are an organic gardening newbie or an experienced gardener, NOFA-NJ’s Organic Gardening Course for Food Production will provide you with time-tested information as well as opportunities to discuss specific questions about your garden. Learn how to improve your soil and how to plan, prepare and plant your garden. Where there are gardens, there are weeds, diseases and pests, and you will discover how to manage these challenges using tested methods for common crops and critters. Our instructor, Al Johnson, has farmed and gardened organically forover 40 years.

What we’ll cover:

  • Session 1: Site Considerations and Water, Planting Crops & Planting Schedules, Direct Seeding or Using Transplants, Rotating Your Crops
  • Session 2: Soil Fertility: Making and Using Compost, Should you test your soil? Using Manures, Lime & Other Soil Additives Using Mulches in Season & Out Cover Crops—Which Ones/Obtaining Seeds/Planting/Incorporation
  • Session 3: Pest Control: Insects—Common Pests/Physical & Cultural Controls/Natural Predators/Biological Controls/Trap Crops/Some Useful Products, Disease: Common Problems/Physical and Cultural Controls: Weed Management: Types & Some Common Ones / Physical & Cultural Controls, Keeping Critters Out
  • Session 4: Extending the Garden Into The Fall: Planting Crops That Grow In The Cold, Small Fruit Primer
