NOFA NJ Tour at Cohansey Meadows Farms
Salt Hay: A Modern Take on a Colonial Era Crop
Join us for a walking tour of one of the mid Atlantic region’s last working salt hay farms with a focus on sustainability, responsible harvest practices, conservation, and adaptation to climate-induced saltwater intrusion. Cohansey Meadows Farms is located in Cumberland County, NJ, along the shores of the Delaware Bay and Cohansey River. The farm’s focus is on sustainable, responsible, conservation-minded agricultural practices. Its primary products are cut salt hay and live native salt marsh plants in addition to its other unique offerings.
Farmer John Zander has a BS in Mechanical Engineering and MBA from Rowan University. Prior to taking over full time operations at Cohansey Meadows Farms in 2021, John held positions in wetland mitigation banking, wholesale agricultural export, commercial fisheries, and conservation land management. His work at the farm has been featured in Civil Eats, NJ Spotlight News, Garden Culture Magazine, and by PBS. John draws inspiration for his work from his family, his fondness of nature and the outdoors, and a compelling sense of responsibility as a steward of the land.
